The game probably has the best narrative in the series, all things considered - though that doesn't mean it's a slouch in the gameplay department. This structure serves a set of incredibly powerful themes about the value of family, about love and loss, about tragedy and hope and DQV executes on these themes flawlessly, weaving a tale that is sometimes heartwarming, sometimes tearjerking, but always insightful and touching. It’s been an absolute, absolute joy to play the first three.ĭifficulty: Moderate (original version), Hard (PS2 remake), Moderate (DS/mobile remake).īuilding on DQIV's more experimental structure, DQV instead takes DQIV's breadth of focus and turns it into depth of focus - instead of individual chapters featuring different characters, DQV focuses exclusively on the main character and follows him throughout his life, from childhood to adulthood, through marriage and beyond. I can’t wait to get through the rest of the series. And that’s true of DQ, but the towns are almost mini-levels of their own, with locations, rumors, and amusing dialogue.

Typically most RPGs use towns to push narrative forward, allow you to upgrade your loot, etc. How brilliant and puzzly the town designs are. I love (at least in 1-3) how a lot of the NPC dialogue contains clues to further along your quest. How the traditional JRPG battle experience is elegant and streamlined. What they don’t tell you is how fun and snappy the gameplay is. In the West, DQ definitely has a reputation for being traditional and stodgy - a meat and potatoes type of RPG.

I was put off by playing them for the longest time. I’ve played through I and II and am nearly done with III at this point. The mobile ports are wonderful if you have a long commute like I do.

I decided to start at the beginning of the series, and can’t say that I’ve regretted it at all.
